Unformatted text preview: [Your Name Here] Public Relations 269 Research Paper Career Path My ultimate goal is to work at a communication firm, such as Northlich, Ameliorate Consulting, Heinrich, or Nellson Consulting. Through the research I have conducted, I have found that each of these communication firms are unique for one reason or another. Although all of the firms listed above are extremely different, employees from each firm say that they offer an exciting work environment, a stable career, good employee benefits, a consistent work schedule, and the ability to continuously learn (Holmes, 2008). Each of these characteristics are things I will be looking for when searching for a career. I interviewed Maureen Richmond, who works at Northlich, a full-service communication firm. She sees many benefits of working in a communication firm versus other careers in the field of public relations. “First of all, it is a stable job that will always be there. Although my daily tasks vary greatly, I have consistent hours, whereas a lot of other careers in the field of public relations do not,” Maureen explained. “I also feel that there are more opportunities to learn while working at a communication firm. In other jobs I have had, I did not face challenges like I do at Northlich. I have learned so much during my time working at Northlich that I wouldn’t have learned working outside of a communication firm.” The information that Maureen shared with me helped me realize that working in a communication firm is the best option for me. I feel that working to improve a company would be an enjoyable situation for me. Before speaking with her I did not know what type of career I intended on pursuing after college. The field of public relations is a broad career field that can be specialized into a single organization or firm. Maureen opened my eyes to uncover my future career goal. Educational Preparation Although there are no defined standards for entry into a public relations career, a four-year college degree combined with public relations experience is considered to be good preparation by most employers. Many entry-level public relations spets have a college major in public relations, journalism, advertising, or communication studies. Some firms seek college graduates who have worked in electronic or print journalism; however, others simply seek applicants with established communications skills and training or experience in a field related to the firm’s business (Career services, 2007)....
