Natural physical division among humans that are hereditary 2. Ethnicity a. Natural origin or distinctive cultural patterns 3. Prejudice a. A negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often an ethnic or racial minority. i. Cognitive Prejudice 1. What people believe is true ii. Affective Prejudice 1. What people like and dislike iii. Conative Prejudice 1. How people are inclined to behave 4. Discrimination a. The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups based on some type of bias i. Institutional Discrimination 1. The denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups that results from the normal operations of society ii. Individual Discrimination 1. Behavior consisting of one-on-one acts by members of the dominant group that harm members of the subordinate group or their property.

5. Redlining a. Denying loans for the purchase of homes in minority neighborhoods 6. Racial Steering a. Realtors try to discourage/encourage people to seek housing in certain neighborhoods or to avoid other neighborhoods based on race. 7. Restrictive home Covenants a. When home owners come together to form a “pact” agreeing that they will not sell or rent their homes to any minority groups. 8. Hate Crimes a. Acts of violence motivated by prejudice or bias which include intimidations, threats, destruction/damage of property, physical assault, and murder.
