Deviance and Crime – Study GuideDeviance:Good – deviation of the norm in a socially approved, positive direction ex (Olympic gold medalists, whose deviance is their decidedly superior level of athletic skill, compared to the rest of us)Bad – behavior that departs from the norm in a way that criticized or condemned by society ex (offensive breach of etiquette- picking your nose, cutting in line- to supremely unconscionable acts such as human trafficking or child molestation) Default – the physical functioning of an individual which depart from the average human condition and which the average person would regard as highly undesirable. Stigma: a discredit, a taint, a stain applied to an individual or to his/her character. The Discreditable: those whose departures from the norm are concealable and who manage to keep them concealed are the discreditable Disidentifiers – props, actions, or verbalizations that serve as a smoke screen to cover their deviance.
