Unformatted text preview: Isabella Bailey Professor Moorhead ENC1101 5 February 2008 M1. Tannen’s purpose in writing this essay is to make people realize that there are these issues in communication. She hopes to get people to reevaluate how they communicate and maybe alter some of their habits while doing so. M2. When Tannen writes “Conversation is a ritual” she means that people are used to conversing with others and don’t think about what they say before they do it. That it is commonplace and there is nothing to be changed or to be wanting of change. WS2. Tannen views women as her primary audience. She uses “you” in paragraphs 9 and 19 addressing women directly to explain that although these things may make a woman uncomfortable it would be in their best interest to work them into their conversational habits.
