Africa is a huge continent with 53 countries, and out of all of those, South Africa has the highest gross domestic product. It is developing at a rapid pace, yet 43% of the people are living on less than $2.00 a day. I lived in a wealthy suburb of Cape Town, however, just minutes away from my house almost half a million people live in squatter camps. This polarity has been dictated by the country’s history. Since the arrival of the Europeans to Southern Africa in the 1600s, a separation of the peoples has existed. The Dutch and the English colonized the land and built much of the infrastructure that can be seen today. With time, an entitlement grew over their societal advances. In 1948, the European Nationalist Government in power began the Apartheid campaign. Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning “apartness”, and that’s exactly what they did. Strict segregation laws were imposed that stripped blacks and coloreds of their citizenship. Education, medical care, and public services were separated by race.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
