Given what Lyons asserts the Allies knew, should the Allies have tried to prevent the atrocities at the concentration camps? What impact would this have had on the war effort? Be sure to think about the military, political and economic ramifications of your answer. In a different situation I think the Allies should have tried to destroy the camps, but in the situation at the time it would have been nearly impossible to complete this task. All of the camps were out of reach for Allied planes until 1943 when they captured an Italian air base. With this capture the only camp that was within reach was Auschwitz. Even though Auschwitz was within reach it still was not possible to successfully bomb this camp. The allies did not have accurate intelligence of the layout of the camp and their bombers were not precise enough to bomb just the chambers without hitting the barracks. Had

It was well known that Hitler would seek revenge on a country or area that resisted the Nazi’s rule or sabotaged their plans. I± one o± the Allies were to bomb the camps there was a good chance that Hitler would ±ocus more o± his a´ack on them. ²his would not have been good ±or the country that tried to destroy the camps. I think the odds were against the Allies when it came to doing something about the camps. I’m sure many people wanted to step in to help the Jews but I think at the Tme it would not have been possible to complete this task....
