While many fans may view the noise merely as "gamebanter", the truth is that the noises have a profound effect on the athletes and theirperformance (Kartal 150). One of the effects is hampering communication between the coachand the players.Coaches and players often have communication problems dealing withcrowd noise and the problems that accompany the noise. The noise can easily causecommunication breakdown between the coach and the players negatively impacting the gameform and the overall performance of the players.Over the recent past, racial slurs and booing have been commonplace in stadiums, allof which have negatively impacted athletes’ performance. Studies show that racial slurs andbooing, particularly for Black athletes adversely impact their mental health, whichconsequently affects their on-field performance (Bennet and King 861). Recently, players ofAfrican descent in European soccer matches have been subjected to racial slurs with somehaving bananas thrown at them—an allusion to them being monkeys. A study comparing thepre-COVID and peri-COVID performance of Black athletes shows a slight improvement inthe performance of the Black athletes (Burdick n.p.).
