Gram + ; have thick peptidoglycan exterior around their plasma membrane this layer retains the first stain resulting in a purple color Gram - ; have a thinner layer of peptidoglycan It doesnt retain as much purple dye be/c it has a thick liposaccharide layer surrounding the peptidoglycan Population growth directly relates to the availability of resources 1. Lag Phase- cells are getting ready to divide rapidly 2. Exponential Phase- now ready to begin- the cells divide rapidly 3. Stationary Phase resources are not sufficient to support such high growth ratesNo net accumulation of cells, cell birth=cell death * if the stationary phase continues for too long, byproducts may accumulate to toxic levels causing increased death rates (Death Phase)...
