Chemistry 154.002 Experiment 9 Preparation of Aspirin Lauren Best Partner: Glenn Cormack 4/7/08 TA: Lek 1. Objective The purpose of this experiment is to produce aspirin using salicylic acid and acetic anhydride and purify the product by recrystallization, and to determine the purity of the crude and recrystallized products using spectrometry. 2. Procedure A) Preparation of Acetylsalicylic Acid 1. Obtain about 1.0 g of salicylic acid. Record the mass, and transfer to a 6-inch test tube. 2. Add 2.5mL of acetic anhydride to the test tube. Mix with a dry stirring rod. 3. Add about 3 drops of phosphoric acid to the test tube. Mix well. 4. Lower the reaction tube into a hot water bath and allow the reaction to proceed for about 15 minutes. 5. Remove the test tube from the hot water bath and place in an ice bath. 6. After about 1-2 minutes, add 10 mL of chilled water. Leave in the ice bath for 10 minutes. 7. Obtain the yield of the product: a) Pre-weigh the weighing dish b) Set up the filtration apparatus c) Filter the product using the Buchner funnel d) Completely dry the product by letting the filtration apparatus run air through the product for several minutes
