Kohorst 1Jason Kohorst Dr. OberlinEnglish 2089 7 July 2014Genre, Audience, and Purpose Reflective EssayThe “Understanding Genre: An aspect of media language” PowerPoint that you providedwith had one slide that really made me think, the first slide said, “At face value, Genre doesn’t seem to be tricky concept at all.” Before I started this class, I assumed that genre was an easy concept; basically it was just what genre is this certain book or what genre is that music from. Those were the two main categories that I applied genre too before I began this course. After doing research and reviewing the links that you provided us with I was blown away at the conclusions that I came up with about genre. I’ve never realized how important genres were the everyday lives of individuals; they’re literally an infinite amount of genres out that pertaining to almost every aspect of life. Three major topics I think of when I hear the word genres are books, movies and music. One connection that you can make between genre and audiences is everyone has a different viewpoint on a certain movie, song or book. An author may describe one of these three as being a horror genre, whereas the reader/audience may consider it to be something completely different. That’s an interesting factor in my mind about genre vs audience because it gives you,the reader the ability to explain to others your take-a-ways as well as taking away useful information from what others categorize certain material to be, creates Another point about theaudience is certain people are attracted to certain genres and authors and screen writers have to
Kohorst 2be careful of that and do extensive research about which genre will attach the largest crowd and create the most profit. (Deane) Michael Dean speaks about the certain types of audiences that are attracted to certain types of genres, and bases his results on the amount of money certain movie genres makes. The main goal of author of books and movie producers is to produce material that attracts not only thought that enjoy that specific genre but make materialthat could reach out to those who maybe not know what they like, they need to appeal to different audiences, not just one specific audience, that’s the goal. Music is the third form in where I see genre play the biggest role is everyday life. Everybody listens to music is one sense or another, whether that be listening to it on your way to school, at your desk at work or while you’re at a party. Different from books and movie, I feel most people like more than onetype of music and can adapt to more different styles of music then books or movies. But whether it be movies, books or music, it’s clear that genre plays a major role is our society.
