Establish X, Y, Z coordinate system in a suitable orientation 2. Sketch object of interest 3. Draw and label known and unknown forces acting on object ± Sense of unknown forces can be assumed 4. Apply equations of equilibrium 5. Solve for unknown force(s) ± If the solution is negative, the assumed sense of the unknown force was incorrect the force acts in the opposite direction
