DiFabio 1/29/08 Submitted 2/1/08 The Importance of Literature Literature; we see it everyday as students, but what is it really ? Why is it so important? The literal definition of literature is: writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays (Dictionary.com). This is certainly not what comes to mind when I think about what literature really is. I personally feel that literature is simply a piece of writing that inspires you or truly moves you. Or perhaps something that makes you feel passionately about something after reading it. I feel that teachers and curriculum chairs are so fixated on enforcing the readings of classic novels and pieces of literature (which to a majority of college students are boring), that they forget what literature really is.
