Skinner called it respondent conditioning CC is essentially responding to the environment CC happens to you B.F. Skinner called another type of learning operant conditioning Operates on the environment to get something to avoid something Also instrumental conditioning in textbook- Dr. Geller doesn’t agree Pavlov was studying the digestive system of dogs in the 1800s He noticed that dogs will salivate to to food before it was given (reflex-involuntary), this was a surprising result Reflexive conditioning happens automatically When a stimulus causes a reflex, the stimulus is called an unconditioned stimulus (US) which causes an unconditioned response (UR) If you sound a loud noise to a baby (UCS), they will cry (UR) Pavlov studied systematically why the dogs would salivate when he came into the lab prior to food distribution Bell (NS)—food (UCS)—salivate (UR) turns into bell (CS)—salivate (CR) We passively engage in this process—it happens to us Stimulus causes (or elicits/triggers ) a behavior Elicited means cause Before acquisition, the neutral stimulus is neutral because it is paired with the
