Lab Section 13 Lab Date: September 11th, 2007 Lab Due: September 18 th , 2007 Lab 1 Part 1 2.1 What is the speed of sound? 344.83 m/s Can you think of why it might vary from day to day? Temperature plays a role in the speed of sound. Cold weather will slow down the speed of sound while hot temperatures will speed it up. Altitude, pressure, and humidity will also play a role, even though temperature is the most important factor. Change the trigger rate to 120 Hz, what is now the maximum measurable distance? .6 meters Can you think of why the maximum distance depends on the trigger rate? The motion sensor emits acoustic pulses with different amounts of space between them depending on the Hz. The trigger has to be low for close distances as the pulses return quickly and it must be high for long distances because the pulses have to be faster as it takes them a long time to come back. A high Hz will be inaccurate for a close object. 2.2
