to try to make it big, others who were born here and don’t know anything other than the city life and still others who are passing through on their journey of existence. I came here looking to find myself, my identity, the person I truly am. The energy of the city and the people in it influence me. My self-consciousness exists because I am aware of everyone around me being aware of me. I think everyone else around me feels the same way. Everyone is self-conscious because we are all aware that others know we exist. This sense of self-consciousness is heightened by being in New York City, one of the largest cities in the world. The density of the tiny island of Manhattan keeps us in close contact with other peoples wherever we are and everyone is constantly trying to gain approval from others. Individuals have a will to succeed in society and to do that we must climb a social ladder, a ladder that involves appeasing others to move up. Georges Duroy tries to achieve the same thing in Guy De Maupassant’s “Bel- Ami”. Duroy is a peasant who moves to Paris in hopes of achieving high social status as well as wealth. Along the way, he uses the people around him to help him move up the ladder. Duroy exemplifies a person who manages his private and public life well as he goes from a lowly railroad clerk to an editor La Vie Francaise at the publishing press. Parisian society at that time shows similarities to our times; where an individual needs to interact with others in an attempt to better one self. Bel-Ami was set in La Belle Époque, the time period between the late 19 th century and the First World War, where France went through a period of cultural renaissance. Architecture and art were thriving; the music in the period was taking on new boundaries;
