Human Species *= will be a test question January 9, 2008 INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 1 ~ What is anthropology? - The Book Definition: the field of inquiry that studies human culture and evolutionary aspects of human biology. o Holistic perspective Look at the entire range of human activity and see who it intertwines in our culture - *Prof. Pete Says: Anthropology is the study of every aspect of human existence in all times and places. - All throughout time anything we or our ancestors have done affects us today ~ What qualifies as “human”? - All of the collective experience of our biological ancestors o Early hominids through modern humans - All of the creatures to whom we are closely related (relatively speaking) o i.e. our “cousins” the great apes o Even prosimians like lemurs can help us understand the processes through which humanity developed o Helps us understand where we got to be today ~ Hominids - Humans are hominids o Belonging to the taxonomic family hominidae - Defining characteristic bipedalism
