JP Seral October 28, 2007 APES 5 th Chapter 7 Vocabulary Saltwater or Marine Aquatic Zone: An area where salt is present. Some examples are estuaries, coral reefs, and coastlines. Freshwater Aquatic Zone: An area where no salt in the water is present. Some examples are lakes, rivers, ponds, etc. Phytoplankton: Free-floating, microscopic cyanobacteria. Zooplankton: A mixture of nonphotosynthetic primary consumers that feed on phytoplankton and secondary consumers that feed on other zooplankton. Nekton: Strongly swimming consumers such as fish and turtles. Benthos: Bottom dwellers such as barnacles and oysters. Euphotic Zone: The lighted upper zone where photosynthesis occurs by phytoplankton. Bathyal Zone: Dimly lit middle zone that does not contain photosynthesizing producers because a lack of sunlight. Occupied by smaller fish. Abyssal Zone: Dark lower zone that is very cold, has little dissolved oxygen, and has enough nutrients to supply 98% of the species in the ocean. Estuary:
