An important fact to this case is that, from birth, Chanou suffered unbearably due to ametabolic disorder that affected her bones. This situation also put Chanou’s parents in greatdistress and worry for their baby, who was only expected to live for 30 months. As a result,Chanou’s parents decided to let her go with the assistance of a physician. Another essential factto this case is that at the time of Chanou’s doctor-aided suicide, this procedure was actuallyconsidered illegal where they lived, in Holland. As fear and controversy lingered around thesubject of neonatal euthanasia and whether or not it was morally permissible for doctors to beperforming such procedures, the Government and willing doctors decided to come together toconfront the issue and implement guidelines upon legalization.
