Nicole Turner 1/23/07 Bus 1950-006 Section A 1. Most computers are Digital Devices that work with discrete numbers, such as 1s and 0s. 2. The Binary number system represents numeric data as a series of 0s and 1s. 3. Extended ASCII uses eight bits to represent each letter of the alphabet. 4. A computer uses Character Data codes to represent the numerals in your social security number and street address, whereas it uses Binary numbers to code numeric data such as you age. 5. A Gigabyte is approximately one billion bytes. 6. An Integrated circuit contains microscopic elements, such as wires, transistors, and capacitors, that are parked onto a very small square of semi conducting material. 7. A computer’s System board is also called a “motherboard” or “main board.” Section B 1. The ALU uses Registers to hold data as the microprocessor performs arithmetic and logical operations. 2. The Control unit in the CPU fetches instructions and coordinates the operation of the entire computer system.
