4/2/08 Chapter 28 Nervous System - Functional unit: neurons - 3 classes of neurons - receive input, interpret it, send out commands. 28.1 - Sensory Neurons o Receives signals from ‘receptor cells’ – Ch 29 – - Interneurons o Transfer signal from neuron to neuron - Motor Neurons o Talk to ‘effector cells’ (muscle cell, gland cell) - PNS- Peripheral Nervous System: sensory and motor neurons in nerves - Nerves: bundle of neurons (and neuroglia) wrapped in connective tissue - Spinal nerves and Cranial nerves - Both contain sensory neurons and motor neurons - Myelin Sheath: fatty substance that covers the axon to speed up the neuron firing. (What kind of glia? Schwann Cells) 28.12 - Somatic nervous system o Nerves that carry signals to and from skeletal muscles o Mostly voluntary o Responds to external stimuli; reflexs o (In green) - Autonomic nervous system o Nerves that regulates internal environment o Internal organs, smooth and cardiac muscle o Involuntary o (In red) 28.13 - Two sets of nerves with opposing effects (antagonistic)
