Lab Report 8: Rotational Motion Daniel Velez Section 024 Performed: November 12, 2015 Due: November 19, 2015
Objective : To investigate the relationship between torque, moment of inertia, and angular acceleration for a rigid body rotating about a fixed axis and to examine conservation of angular momentum. Description : This lab utilizes the PASCO software with the rotary motion sensor to help us gain experimental data for a super-pulley apparatus that will allow us to experimentally derive values for moment of inertia for various rigid rotating bodies. Theory : The equation of motion for a particle moving in a circle was already derived in a previous laboratory report and so this explanation will pick up with the application of Newton’s 2 nd Law to become the form: F tan = mrα . By multiplying both sides by r , we can derive r F tan = m r 2 α . This quantity r F tan is called the torque τ about the axis of the circle. The quantity mr 2 is called the moment of inertia I of the mass about the same axis. The
