Jeremy Hansen Assignment #2 Margaret Atwood's essay "Letter to America" was about the way America is changing, and has changed since fifty years ago. The article starts off by describing America as being great because of its pop culture such as Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck, and musicians like Matt King Cole. The essay then jumps to America’s present day foreign and home front policies. The essay reads that America is breaking and “gouging” our own Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. It goes to say that America is ruining its image because of the way we are handling wars, and our policies such as “The Patriot Act.” Our country is then compared to the city on the “hill”. In roman and medieval times the city on the hill was their idea of “Utopia”; hence, our country to her was her own idea of utopia. Margaret Atwood makes some good points in her paper, but are they valid in saying that America is changing, and has changed for the worse in the last fifty years.
