Drury 1 Summer Drury Professor Bailey English 1101 October 1, 2007 Fallacy Exam 1. I went to my professor’s office to ask him a question about the deadline for research papers, but he wasn’t in. Fortunately there was a janitor nearby, so I asked him. (1) a. Non Sequitur b. He went to ask the professor a question, but since he wasn’t there he asked the janitor instead. The janitor has no idea when anyone’s deadlines are, so asking him would just be a waste of time. c. I went to my professor’s office to ask him a question about the deadline for the research papers, but since he wasn’t in, I left him a note with the question and my e-mail address and asked him to get back to me as soon as possible. 2. Most college students either love the opera or they hate it. (4) a. False Dilemma (Either/Or Thinking) b. Not everyone sees things in black and white, most college students have probably never heard opera, or they might like some, but not all of it. c. Most college student that have seen or heard opera either loves it or hates it. 3. Since all my friends at the party were drinking, I decided I’d drink too. (5) a. Tu Quoque/Rationalization b. The person decided that since everyone else was drinking, it was okay for them to drink too even though they really knew it was wrong to do. The fallacy tu quoque
