Drury 1 Summer Drury Professor Bailey English 1101 October 29, 2007 Are the Homeless Parasites? Homeless people, unfortunately, are viewed at the bottom of the totem pole and are considered “parasites” by many people (201). For the most part they have the odds stacked completely against them. Those that are able to pull themselves out are few and far between and frankly, they are incredibly lucky. Many people have horrible preconceived notions about the homeless, most of which aren’t even close to being true. Thomas Sowell says that “the plain truth is that drugs, alcohol, or an irresponsible, hustling, or criminal mentality have flooded our streets with parasites;” however, not all homeless people are drunks or drug-addicts (201). Many have just come to a hard place in life and they don’t have the resources available to them to get through it. This could be because they haven’t planned for things carefully or it could simply be luck of the draw for them. Helping these people out should not be considered a crime of any sort;
