Writing assignment due wed, October 3 rd Test mod, October 8th Chapter 5 Variations in Consciousness Consciousness What is consciousness? o A person’s awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings that he or she is  experiencing at a given moment Altered State of Consciousness (ASC): changes that occur in quality and pattern of  mental activity Sleep How much sleep does a person need? o Average 7 to 8 hours o Short sleepers – 5 hours or less o Long sleepers – 9 hours or more o Circadian Rhythm – sleep wake cycle Sleep Waves Electroencephalograph (EEG): Brain-wave machine; amplifies and records  electrical  activity in the brain o Awake – beta waves o Eyes closed, relaxed – alpha waves Stages of sleep Stage 1:  Theta waves , small irregular waves produced in light sleep o Hypnic Jerk: Reflex muscle contraction Stage 2: Deeper sleep;  sleep spindles  (bursts of distinctive brain-wave activity) appear Stage 3: Deeper sleep;  Delta waves  appear; very large and slow Stage 4: Deepest level of normal sleep; almost purely  Delta waves REM- NonREM Cycle 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, REM, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, REM…. . The longer you are asleep, the less time you spend in the deep sleep and spend more in the light
