Chapter 8 Social Class in the USA -Most sociologists use Weber’s ideas in classifying social class. -The term C. Wright Mills used for those individuals who make the big decisions in American society was the power elite - Social Class : a large group of people who rank closely to one another in Property Power (ability to get your way) Prestige (occupational status) -Status Inconsistency= ranking high on dimensions of social class and low on others (ex. Actors high income, low political power) -Status Inconsistency is common for lottery winners because there wealth is greater than the statuses that come with their education and occupation -Theories (models): -Karl Marx -Capitalists------ workers * Capitalists (bourgeoisie) - those who own means of production * Workers (proletariat) – those who work for the capitalists -Wright “Contradictory class action” -Eric D. Wright 1. Capitalists (business owners) 2. Petty bourgeoisie (small business owners) 3. Managers (sell their own labor but manage employees) 4. Workers (sell labor to others) -Gilbert & Kahl’s class ladder - Capitalist (prestigious university) 1% $1,000,000 +
