Theory is the basis of the nursing profession. Theory provides a foundation for nursingand nursing practice. I utilize theory in research as a basis of everything I do. I have learnedtheory and evidence in the nursing process and understand how foundational theory and researchcombined with evidence-based practices has enriched nursing practice. In nursing education, nursing theories are fundamental for gaining knowledge and training used to improve patientoutcomes. Nursing theory guides nursing practice by creating frameworks, strategies, andevidence-based approaches for patient care. With the development of nursing theory, it hasevolved nursing from a task-oriented profession to a distinguished expert profession. Nursingtheory has provided a moral and ethical structure to the profession and promotes a means ofsystematic thinking about nursing and the practice (McEwan & Wills, 2019).Nursing theory is a process and a product (McEwen, 2019). It provides an understanding of thereality of nursing and enables the nurse to understand why events happen. If we are to improvepractice, there must be a joint relationship between theory and practice. Theory-based nursingpractice applies models, theories and principles from nursing science, biological, behavioral, medical, and sociocultural discipline to nursing practice (McEwen, 2019). Nurses must gainknowledge, skills, expertise, theory and practice weaved in a supportive process through theory
