Ryan Brandenburg Management, Gender, and Race – 4 December 15, 2007 The Weaker Sex in a Strong Industry Women in Construction is an article published in the September 2002 volume of Housing Economics . The article was written by researcher Mousumi Sarkar and is about the statistics of women in the male dominated construction industry . Back in 2001 only 2 .4 percent of construction workers in the United States were females . The article also talks about some of the possible reasons for the low level of women laborers . One possible reason for low women involvement is the vast amount of sexual harassment women suffers on the job, which is estimated to be 82 percent . There was nothing really surprising about the articles facts and figures of how few women there are in construction . Having done work in the construction industry I have only seen only about a handful of women working side-by-side with me . What does surprise me, however, is the amount of harassment there is in the workplace towards the women who work for the construction companies . Another possible reason, which is not addressed in the article, could be the physical
