Database approach is a computer based storage technology in which related data can be shared by different application programs and multiple users simultaneously. It is an enhancement of traditionally file-based approach of storing data or information. It is characterized by a database management system and one or more databases. It has both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages of Database approach are: 1. Consistency of Data: Each item of data is held only once therefore no threat of item being updated on one system and not on another. 2. Control over Redundancy: In a non-database system, the same information may be held on a number of files. This wastes space and makes updating more time consuming. These effects are reduced by a database system. 3. Greater Security of Data: The DBMS can guarantee only authorized users are permitted to access the data. 4. Integrity of Data: It provides users with the ability to specify constraint on data such as making a field entry necessary or using a validation routine. Apart from the above there are many other advantages with the database approach. As the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, we can ignore the disadvantages.
