James Shamrock Critique Paper Number 1 January 17, 2008 Introduction to Natural Sciences The first presentation encountered this semester was performed by Professor Mostardi. The first presentation for this course was simply an introduction as to what topics will be covered this semester and also researching and experimentation in science. The in-class example was one concerning a pharmaceutical drug and the steps required to become approved for public use. I found it very interesting to see exactly how long it takes for a drug to be made available for public use. It’s a strenuous long road for a drug to make it to the pharmaceutical shelves, averaging about 100 million dollars over a 10 year time period. When I first heard the duration of time needed to complete this task I was stunned; nonetheless, the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Is the drug effective? Well, experiments and research needs to be performed on the drug to see if this is true. Extensive experimentation is required in science, especially in our
