1As reported among 2,861 opioid-related deaths in Canada from 2016-2017, 26% were women, and over half of them were in childbearing age (Haas, 2019, p. 81). Canada is one of the top-ranked country in opioid consumption where one in every six people have reported opioid usefor pain relief. This has led to an unheard opioids epidemic among the infants resulting inmortalities, withdrawal symptoms and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) shortly after birthwhich has been estimated to be about 1850 infants born with NAS (Haas, 2019, p. 81). ManyNAS cases are under-reported since it is associated with drug addiction, which has left manyfamilies to suffer in silence. Although the increased awareness has led to improvement toovercome overprescribing and increase narcotic safety, health professionals are still failing toidentify opioid use leading to long-term and short-term effects. But nurses still play a vital role inassessing the treatment and supporting the patient in the absence of universal screening foropioid use.
