Mark Sullivan English 1113 Section 34 October 5, 2007 Essay 2 The Barry Bonds scandal has been a large story in the media for some time now. This dispute of his suspected steroid use and how he has artificially broken Hank Aaron’s home run record has left the public in an uproar. Trevor Bothwell’s argument, “Barry Bonds and the State,” has brought attention to how this problem is receiving much more attention from the government than many other issues. Trevor attempts to prove to the public that office officials are attacking Barry Bonds is an effort to fight the “war on drugs” (1), when we have drug dealers roaming the streets. Trevor Bothwell points out key facts to the public to emphasize on the problems we have with the government in regards to how the public is dealing with this issue. The true purpose of this article is not the tainted home run record but how the government and media have dealt with it. By focusing so much time, effort, and money to this subject rather than to issues such as poverty and war on crime, the public must
