Anthro 2a 415.08 Most 19cetnury social scientists were “armchair anthropologists” Franz Boas is an anthropologist who eventually challenges the social Darwinists and scientific  racists oh the 1800’s. Franz Boas was born in Germany in the 1800’s but he was of Jewish heritage. He was  marginalized by the German society he was raised in. Franz Boas studied Physics at a German University  While he was conducting physics research in the arctic, he became intrigued by Inuit (Eskimo)  Society. Franz Boas left Germany in the 1880’s for the U.S. During the 1880’s many American citizens of “Anglo” ethnicity disapproved of the Rise in  American Immigration in the 1880’s.  Most social scientists in the U.S. in the 1880’s maintained the attitude that non-Anglos were  inferior. They used Craniometry comparisons to verify their perspectives.
