Key Assessment 3—Unit Assessment Planning (3a-b-c)- Planning for Student Learning ABOUT THE UNIT Your Full Name XXX Title of the Unit Hydrology Subject: Earth Science Grade Level 6th Description of the Unit This unit focuses on the distribution and movement of Earth’s water. The unit includes investigations into the mechanisms that drive the water cycle, the three states of matter that water forms, and the distribution of water on Earth’s surface. Students will learn how solar heat, and gravity are driving forces for both climate and the water cycle. This unit will also investigate how evaporation cleans and replaces Earth’s freshwater supply before precipitation returns it to earth’s surfaces. Students will also gain an understanding of the limited nature of freshwater available for use and the importance of freshwater conservation. S6E3. a.Explain that a large portion of the Earth’s surface is water, consisting of oceans, rivers, lakes, underground water, and ice. S6E3. b.Relate various atmospheric conditions to stages of the water cycle. S6E3. c.Describe the composition, location, and subsurface topography of the world’s oceans. S6E3. d.Explain the causes of waves, currents, and tides. S6E6.Students will describe various sources of energy and with their uses and conservation. S6E6. a.Explain the role of the sun as the major source of energy and its relationship to wind and water energy. Common Core Standards Covered in this Unit No Common Core Standards Depending on your subject, list national standards covered in this Unit. Structure of the Earth System
NSES 1.Water, which covers the majority of the earth’s surface, circulates through the crust, oceans, and atmosphere in what is known as the ‘water cycle’. Water evaporates from the earth’s surface, rises and cools as it moves to higher elevations, condenses as rain or snow, and falls to the surface where it collects in lakes, oceans, soil, and in rocks underground. NSES 2.Water is a solvent. As it passes through the water cycle it dissolves minerals and gases and carries them to the oceans. NSES 4.Clouds, formed by the condensation of water vapor, affect weather and climate. LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS UNIT Learning Objectives LO1. By the end of the lesson, students will describe the subsurface topography of the world’s oceans. Students will demonstrate their mastery by labeling a diagram of the ocean floor. Students will have to score a minimum of 75% in order to demonstrate mastery of the content.
