Objective:The objective is to determine the specific heat of various solids using the method of mixtures.Apparatus:Styrofoam cup or other calorimeter, digital thermometer, steam generator, balance, specific heat specimens. Procedure:1.Select a solid specimen of mass “m” and unknown specific heat capacity “c.” Hang the specimen inside the steam generator by a string for about 5 minutes so that the specimen will reach the temperature of the steam. Do not start the 5 minute timer until steam is produced. 2.While the specimen is heating up obtain a Styrofoam cup and add just enough water to cover the object. Use cold water that is about 5 ˚C below room Temperature. Just before you remove the object from the steam generator measure the temperature of the water in the cup. Then remove the object from the steam generator, quickly dab it dry with a paper towel, and insert it in the cup, then place the lid on the cup.
