ISyE 3039 A Homework 1 Due January 31, 2008 1. (Exercise 4.27 from the textbook.) Laboratory glassware has been shipped from the manufacturer to your plant via an overnight package service, and it has arrived dam- aged. Develop a cause-and-effect diagram that identifies and outlines the possible causes of this event. Use JMP to draw this diagram. 2. The peel strength ( Y ) of photo resist in the lamination process of PCBs depends on the pressure ( x ) and temperature ( z ) by the relation Y = 50 + 5 x + 10 z + 20 xz - 0 . 01 x 2 z 2 . The temperature is a noise variable and has some distribution with mean 100 and variance 25. Find the value of the pressure to maximize the mean peel strength. 3. It is required to maintain the pH of the water at 7 . 5 ± 0 . 5 in a water treatment process. Two methods of treatment are available. Method 1 gives a mean pH of 7.5 and standard deviation 1.0, whereas method 2 gives a mean pH of 7.8 and standard deviation 0.5. Assume that pH follows a normal distribution. Which method is preferable in terms of maximizing the pH values within the specifications?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
