THE CHILDLESS ELDERLY 2 The increase in childlessness has brought on the perception of disadvantages in older adults [ CITATION Bur09 \l 1033 ]. To be childless in old age can result in the loss of “social participation, health and social support” [ CITATION Hag07 \l 1033 ] that society has come to expect the permanent ties of commitment from the spouse and children would provide in later life [ CITATION Gol86 \l 1033 ]. The benefits that children can provide in old age and the struggles of being childless will be examined Women continue to remain childless for many reasons.
