Laura Dunn English 101 10-17-06 Essay 3-Analyzing Images Ch. 5 TO BE GRADED Images are everywhere in our lives. Whether we like it or not, often times these images get ingrained in our heads. I find myself observing pictures in ads or on TV in a critical or ironic way, picking out the things that people are probably not supposed to notice or care about. The image I chose depicts an African-American girl, probably in her late teens or early twenties. She is in a martial arts pose, arms drawn out and legs bent and spread apart. She has a tiny Nike tank top on, a beanie hat, large hoop earrings, and a big square ring on her right hand. There are a few things that strike me as odd about this picture—the girl looks flawless, and is complete with jewelry and lip gloss. She has perfect skin and perfect hair, despite the fact that she is supposed to be working out. I initially liked this image, along with the caption, before I started dissecting it. The text states “There’s a hot chick in the mirror. She knows the coolest moves.
