Laura Dunn English 101 11-28-06 Essay 6-Argumentative/Persuasive Essay Ch. 6 TO BE GRADED Rape Laws Too Broad? Statutory rape laws have always been a cause of concern for me. In New York, the age of consent is 17 years old. However, many other issues need to be taken into consideration, such as the situation, who is filing the charges, and who the charges are being filed against. I believe the statutory rape laws are too broad and the situation where they are used should always be assessed. The one specific situation that is of most concern to me is young people who are sexually involved. A 17-year-old boy is dating a girl a little bit younger than him. She’s sixteen, and they’re sexually active. Whether or not this is illegal before he turns 18 is not the issue—the fact is that when that boy turns 18, depending on what state he lives in, he could be charged, go to prison, and be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life. New York State law says that a person less than 17 years of age is unable to consent to sexual contact or intercourse. New York State gives driving licenses to 16-
