9/10/07 Test on Friday will be 10 multiple choices mostly on lectures, and the second portion will be an essay Review sheet hopefully on blackboard by tonight Bring blue book 50 points for multiple choice, 50 points for the essay  Spanish Iberian Path to 1492 “Reconquest”*** Mussulmans (Moors) On the maps (on blackboard) much of the land is dominated by Moors Efforts given to push Islamic influence off the Iberian peninsula, the state of affairs in 1030 By 1210 the Reconquista is somewhat successful, Aragon and are beginning to exert their power By 1360 Islamic presence has been pushed to Granada Reconquista*** know this term, try to push Islamic influence off Iberia  o 711 AD perhaps the most significant year in the history of Spain  That’s the year that the Muslims began trying to spread their Moorish influence on Iberia  o Crusades By 1265 Spain was intimately involved in the Crusades, which reinvigorated efforts at  Reconquista o Africa and Prester John Africa always seen as the stronghold of Islamic influence Spain and Iberia always saw Africa as a place for conversion  Motivated by the legend of Prester John Prester John was supposedly a Christian ruler isolated somewhere in the  environs of Africa, so spurred by Reconquista, both what would become Spain  and Portugal looked at Africa as this mythical place where Prester John sits  awaiting Christianity to come and help him  Went hand in hand to allow Iberian peoples to really explore and journey to the Western  Coast of Africa Cultural ethos of the legend of Prester John, if we get a foothold in Africa, we can cure
