Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to gather as much physical information as possible about an unknown substance in order to correctly to identify it. While we are not trying to identify what the substance actually is, we are comparing the information obtained by the other members of our group and looking for similarities among the data. The goal is to obtain as many physical properties of an unknown substance as possible. In this lab were will use the basic physical properties of the substance like solubility, density, and melting point to determine the similarities between the substances. Procedure: A. Solubility- First, add a small amount of your unknown solid to a 75 mm test tube. Second, add a few milliliters of hexane to the test tube and shake it. Then repeat this same step using water and then ethanol in place of the hexane. Third, describe the overall solubility of the solid in the solution as soluble, slightly soluble, or insoluble with regards to how well the solid dissolves in the liquid and record your data. B. Density- First, measure the mass of a 1 mL volumetric flask to the nearest
