Robert Cummings RhetComp 1 Mr. Chitwood 1 st Sem, 2007 Unit 3 Essay RD In today’s society, every person has created their own identity for themselves. The ways in which they do this varies greatly. However, many people are strongly influenced by outside forces that suggest how they should identity themselves. In recent years, shopping malls have taken the world by storm. For certain individuals, shopping malls are the sole reason why one dresses and acts the way they do. Obviously through shopping malls has come the great obsession and hobby of shopping. It is clear that for countless years, many people have become obsessed with shopping or have allowed it to influence the type of person they appear to be. As time goes on, this commodity will only become more popular and gradually every person will become obsessed with his or her social life and personal identity through shopping. Shopping malls are extremely popular for some and hated by others. “The mall is a favorite subject for the laments of cultural conservatives and others critical of the culture of consumption” (Norton CL 159). I think this quote holds a great deal of truth. Shopping malls worldwide are goldmines. The amount of consumption that takes place in the average shopping mall is immense. Over time as new commodities arise, the popularity of shopping malls grows even more. However, at the same time, many conservatives do not appreciate the popularity of shopping malls because they feel the culture of consumption is asinine.
