Truman Doctrine Policy set forth by Harry S Truman in 1947- Initially aimed at what was happening in Greece- military and economic aid to help defeat Greek communism - evolved to any nation fighting communist parties NATO & Warsaw Pact North Atlantic Treaty Organization - 1949 - formed against perceived Soviet threat - all forces intervene if any of the participants are attacked by USSRWarsaw Pact - 1953 - the Soviet version of NATOProxy Wars used client-states to fight instead of actual war between USSR and NATO (Korea was the first sort of real proxy war) Jean Monnet and "funtional spillover" developed Schuman plan - interconnection of various economic sectors or issue-areas, and the integration in one policy-area spilling over into EDC European Defense Community - 1952 - France did not want to re-arm Germany but they needed to, so they had a new plan - they decide NOT to become a 3rd superpower - EDC defeated by 59 votes in France assembly - W. Germany was admitted to NATO ECSC
