The story I have chosen to write a research paper on is Hamlet by Shakespeare. This story is an example of revenge tragedy. The King of Denmark has died. His brother Claudius now controls the crown, has remarried his brother’s wife and taken all his brother’s power. Hamlet, who is the King and Queen’s son, seeks revenge after seeing hisfather’s Ghost, who confesses he got murdered by his own brother and instructs him to kill him. Hamlet failed many times attempting revenge resulting in many people dying, including Ophelia, Polonius, Laertes, the Queen Gertrude, Claudius, Hamlet’s two friendsand himself. The main focus of this story is tragic revenge. During my research I found that Shakespeare did not just focus on Hamlet’s revenge, but that many other characters sought revenge as well. For example Laertes, when he found out Hamlet killed his father, was seeking revenge not only for Polonius but for his sister Ophelia too. Also, Hamlet’s father killed the King of Norway, Hamlet’s father’s arch nemesis, in battle. The King of Norway’s son, the prince of Norway, Fortinbras, therefore wanted revenge on Denmark. The story is considered tragic, because of the cost of revenge. All the characters in the story who wanted revenge died. What Hamlet didn’t realize is that vengeance always comes with a price especially if it is not done properly. Many Catholics view this story as a means of justice because of how Claudius’ actions were towards his own brother. Claudius was selfish andwanted only power, so Hamlet’s desire for revenge could be taken as positive. According to the bible a person who wants fame and money more than God vengeance catch up to 1
them. So the killing of Claudius would be taken as morally good in a Catholics’ perspective.
