Response Paper 6 Fueling our Fears provides important commentary on episodic and thematic coverage regarding Muslims and the media. The persuasive methods of the media often leads to misinformed and uneducated viewers, thus furthering false impressions and hurtful stereotypes. It is interesting to note that sever negative coverage of Arabs and Muslims came to a head 6 full months after the September 11 th bombings and rather some positive media coverage was present in the immediate days and weeks after the terrorist attacks. In the book Nacos makes an important distinction between what Americans view as abusive treatment and what we perceive as torture tactics on the part of American forces. Nacos mentions the nature of media is creating an “us versus them” perception of Americans and the Arab world. The shear nature of the distance between North America and South East Asia is a large factor in the dehumanizing persona these captured terrorists or even terrorist suspects take on.
