PHIL 100 Essay 1 Plato Plato prefers using the dialectic method more so than any other means of conversation. The dialectic method (or Socratic Method) is the exchange of arguments and counter-arguments respectively advocating propositions and counter-propositions ( plato-dialogues.org/tetra_3/tetra_3.htm). It is a mutual search for the truth for the two people engaged in this conversation. Plato uses the dialectic method throughout his life, and is seen in many of his works including Apology, Meno, and Republic. In the Apology of Socrates, Socrates defends himself against charges of corrupting the young and not believing in the Gods. Sophists in Plato and Socrates time were men who had a special skill or craft that they could teach others. Socrates gets charged with teaching children knowledge beyond traditional math and schooling. Officials thought this as an act of defiance by Socrates against the city. Socrates uses the dialectic method in his defense speech. He accuses his accuser, Meletus, of not caring about the things he “claims” to care about (Plato, 33/34). He then cross examines Meletus even though he is the one on trial and gets him to contradict himself. During his speech, Meletus comes back at Socrates saying he is an atheist who believes
