10/27/2015°The May Fourth Movement°Historical context:°-The Republic Revolution of 1911°-The “October Revolution” (1917)°-“The Treaty of Versailles” (1919)°°Iconoclastic Stance ofNew Youth(1915)°-Anti Confucian principle°1. Confucianism deprives society of its dynamic force°2. Confucian dogma has lost its relevance°-change is the principle, Confucian thought doesn’t keep upgradingitself with changed landscape—therefore Confucian dogma has becomeirrelevant°3. Replace classical works with a new vernacular literature°°The large scale expressions of Chinese nationalism:°-Initially students from Peking university, but everyday people joinedthe students°Borrow western ideas as weapons to attack Confucian tradition°The problem with May 4thmovement:°-Students denounced the didactic concept of “literature conveys TheWay/Dao”°-The Way/Dao= the Confucian dogma°-Dogma has confined the mind from developing further
°°The irony in retrospect°The goal: set Chinese minds free of the old shackle (Confucian dogma)°Use literature in much the same way of utilitarian didacticism (for themay 4th intellectuals)°-Confucian dogma has to be replaced by revolutionary thought°The critical issue: for both Confucian scholar and May 4thintellectuals°-The Way was more important than literature°-Confucian dogma is replaced by iconoclastic Marxism°-Literature is only used as a tool to carry the more important way°The method used to promote Marxism is problematic°°
