Dwarf Planet - Planetary mass object that is neither a planet nor satellite, in direct orbit of the sun. Natural Satellite - celestial body that orbits another celestial body with larger mass. i.e. moon orbits earth Terrestrial Planets - 4 inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars . Earth-like, rocky surfaces -no substantial atmosphere Mercury - smallest planet, slightly bigger than earth’s moon- covered in craters Venus - closest in size to earth- toxic atmosphere makes surface hot enough to melt lead, more CO2 in atmosphere Earth - abundance of liquid water on surface- sustainable for life- unique greenery. Water comes from comets impacted earth Mars - frozen desert planet-has seasons, weather, polar ice caps, volcanoes, canyons, etc. Volcanoes north, Craters south Jovian Planets - 4 outer planets, Jupiter-like, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune –blue due to methane All are gigantic compared to earth- thick atmospheres Rotate much faster than inner planets- Jupiter’s day is only 10 hrs. Much more massive, but made from less dense materials- hydrogen and helium- hydrogen compounds Hydrogen Compounds= “ices”- water (H2O), methane (CH4), and ammonia (NH3) Extensive system of moons. Asteroid Belt - Doughnut shaped ring of asteroids in orbit between mars and Jupiter Asteroid - rocky airless worlds that orbit the sun- millions of them- formed inside frost line, comets outside. Leftover planetesimals NASA sends missions through here because it is almost impossible to be hit by one- mil km in between Ceres- Largest Asteroid- large enough for gravity to force it into a sphere shape- Dwarf Planet Rings of Saturn - Saturn possesses the most extensive planetary ring system of any planet in our system Rings are made up of billions of ice particles- 99.9% pure water ice particles- 1cm- 10m in diameter Ring Particles clump together- aggregates are continually forming and dispersing Main Rings - A&B Rings are Densest separated by Cassini Division-C ring, wide faint ring inside B Dusty Rings - innermost ring; small dusty particles F-Ring- outermost thing ring outside the A-ring Comets- Small icy particle that when it passes near the sun it heats up and outgases producing a bright light Solar System Nebulae- the explanation for formation of the solar system Nebula- a cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.
