Unformatted text preview: ANCIENT EGYPT ANCIENT EGYPT Gods, Rulers, and the Social Order < Egypt emerged along the bank of the 4,00-mile-long Nile River before 3150 B.C.E. < Egypt was called by Greek historian Herodotus, the gift of the Nile because of the annual overflow of the Nile every 365 days the source of Egypts solar calendar < Unified under a sole ruler ca. 3150 B.C.E. < Relatively invulnerable to invasion because surrounded by sea and desert. < Egypt was stable because : 1. Egyptians had a uniform political, religious, and cultural life 2. The people shared a common language 3. The people shared a common world view EGYPT IS THE GIFT OF THE NILE (Herodotus, Greek Father of History) How are these irrigation fields a METAPHOR for the social stratification and organization of Ancient Egypt? The Sun God : Though Egypt was polytheistic , its main god was the Sun God , known variously as Ra, Amon, or Aten. Egyptian cosmology described the origins of the world as a flat platter floating on the waters of the underworld. From a mound of silt deposited by the Nile arose the Sun God from whom all other gods were made. The Gods of Egypt Osiris, God of the Underworld : Osiris , associated with the Nile, was killed by his evil brother, Set , and his body chopped into pieces and scattered over the earth. Isis , wife of Osiris, gather up the pieces of his body and restored Osiris to life. Isis and Osiris produced a son, Horus , the sky-god depicted as a falcon , who defeated Set and became ruler of Egypt. Ultimately, Egyptian religion celebrated some 2,000 gods and place great emphasis on the concept of resurrection . Egypt emerged along the bank of the 4,00-mile-long Nile River before 3150 B.C.E.
