1 ANCIENT HEBREWS ANCIENT HEBREWS The Old Testament Contains 39 books and … • is the first part of the Christian Bible, identical in content with the Hebrew scriptures (though subdivided somewhat differently). • contains 17 historical books (Genesis to Esther); 5 poetical books (Job to The Song of Solomon); and 17 prophetic books (Isaiah to Malachi). It is a history of Israel – its laws given by God, its failure to live up to those laws, and its return to God’s love and redemption. THE PENTATEUCH •Relates the history of the Jews from the Creation to the death of Moses. • It is comprised of the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) • It contains THE TORAH, or law of Moses, believed to be the revealed word of God given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. ABRAHAM founder and first patriarch of the Hebrews (Hapiru Tribe) • Given a covenant (agreement) by Yaweh (Jehovah, God of the Hebrew) to migrate (ca. 2500-2000 B.C.E.) from Ur to a “Promised Land” (Canaan). Abraham is called by his God to migrate from Ur of Mesopotamia to the land of Canaan (or Israel or Palestine).
